Compared to many other industries, the bedding world can be a dirty place to do business. It gets really confusing because many companies inflate claims, outright lie, and do all sorts of other things to make you buy their product. Plus most of these facts about fabrics and bedding are not really taught to consumers to help them make the best decision possible.

Let's take a look at some of the biggest myths regarding so called ways to judge the quality of bedding. You are really going to change the way you look at luxury bedding and the way you buy will also change because you know more.

Higher Thread Counts Means Superior Bedding

This was and still is a huge marketing message every since Egyptian cotton became incredibly popular. When thread count first started to really become well known the measurement went through the roof and everybody thought the higher the better. However, there are some insane tradeoffs when you keep increasing the thread counts.

It's important to know that the higher the thread count the more luxury the feel, but the less it breaths. Plus with more threads, it does get a lot heavier as well. What you have to know is there is a balance with thread count that will feel really good for you. Not to complicate things more, but when you introduce different fabrics this balance can change as some fabrics just breath much better.

The Higher The Price The Better The Sheet

You can attribute this too to the popularity if Egyptian cotton. With the higher thread counts, the prices started to go really high too. As humans, we are naturally inclined to think the higher the price the better the product.

It's very true for the most part but there are many exceptions as well. It's not uncommon to find people that have bought sheets that cost a small fortune only to hate them when they actually use them. These types of sheets don't breath well and they have a heft to them that is hard to get used to. And when it comes to price, some companies will just jack up their prices to make them look better in your eyes, knowing full well that it's an inferior product.

How The Sheets Are Named

It can get very confusing when you look at the names of some of these bedding options. Just look at the confusion of pure silk sheets compared to that of synthetic polyester bedding. The term most people know is satin bedding. What most people don't know is the fact that satin is a weave of fabric and not an actual fabric itself.

When you go look at certain bedding sets, you'll see they say satin silk but it's just the name as they are not really true silk. However it's actually just polyester. Pure silk is made from pure silk but also weaved with the satin weave which is where the confusion happens.

Misunderstanding Fabrics

Most people really don't understand the properties of different fabrics and how they react to your body. This is not really a myth so much as a lack of education with bedding materials. A good example of this is how some companies frame their bedding as being the ultimate in breathability but the primary fabric is polyester which is the worst fabric for that.

Silk on the other hand is very expensive, but it repels almost all allergens and breaths the best of all fabrics. So it could easily be worth the cost. You just have to start learning about the different fabrics.
